New Britt Robertson Interview
19-year-old CW star Britt Robertson is taking a break from her Vancouver set to fill us in on her cool new TV series about Lux, a smart and feisty teen stuck in the foster care system who ends up with her clueless young birth parents. We wanted to know about Ravi Gavron, Lux's bad boy, hottie boyfriend "Bug" on the show and what hot movie star guy Britt would kill to co-star with.
We are getting her take on Lux's cute wardrobe, very cool young "mom" on the show "Roswell" alum Shiri Appleby (they are roomies!) and how she feels about a kick butt scene in which Lux goes to a new high school and rules at the popular girls' table the first day!
Check this out and check out the show on the CW Monday nites....
Britt Robertson as Lux in "Life Unexpected".
The CWHey Britt, thanks for talking to us on your break. You are from a big family, seven kids, so is it kind of wish fulfillment to be in a TV show where you are an only child with a huge attic for a room?
Britt: Yeah, exactly! It definitely was different to play someone who comes from a small family when I come from this large family. I can relate a little bit because Lux kind of has this big 'family' background from being in group homes where you are constantly around kids.
There is this flashback episode where you get to see her childhood a little bit so there were moments where I could relate to my own big family. But some of (what Lux experiences) is like a fish out of water (to me).
When Lux is suddenly sent to a posh high school, she is able to just go up to the popular girls' table and bullshit her way into being one of them right away. It's pretty cool. Could you do that or would you be more shy?
Britt: She's been thrown into different environments her entire life so I think she's so used to fitting in and dealing with people and me, I'm a people person and can relate to people really well but as far as totally jumping into the middle of a situation and blatantly lying, I don't think I could necessarily do that. That's a little out of my element.
Britt Robertson as Lux and Rafi Gavron as Bug in "Life Unexpected".
The CWWho plays Bug, your boyfriend on the show? He's "bad-boy" adorable. Do you guys hang out off set? Is he in more than the first three episodes?
Britt: He's so cute! I love him. His name is Rafi Gavron and he's in the show throughout the season. We just finished his last scene yesterday and we're all sad but I'm sure he'll be back in season 2. He's a terrific actor and we'll see more of his work. He's very talented. He's from London originally and moved to L.A. when he was 15.
Do you guys get to hang out off set?
Britt: We have a couple of times, yeah. We all hang out in groups pretty much. We'll have little parties at our house or bar-be-ques or go out to dinner. We sort of just hang as a big family.
What is the one thing a guy must never do it he wants to date you?
Britt: One thing is he should never try and make a move on the first date. Shiri and I were talking about this the other day. One of the writers was bringing it up and we're like 'that's so rude.
If you're that desperate where you have to make a move on the first date and so unsure that you can't wait for the second then it's like 'yaa, you're out!'.
Britt Robertson as Lux in "Life Unexpected".
The CWWho is your celebrity crush?
Britt: My celeb crush for the longest time is Josh Hartnett and I still go ga ga over him. Then I sort of got into John Krasinski from "The Office". I just want to be Pam in love with Jim. I have a stuffed monkey named Jim.
Two cute guys are on the show as your birth dad Baze (Kristoffer Polaha) and the radio personality guy your mom is engaged to Ryan (Kerr Smith). If it were Britt choosing a dad and not Lux... would you go for the Ryan type or the Nate type?
Britt: (laughing) Oh, that's mean! They are so different. I think Ryan is like super responsible. For me, I think I would choose Baze (the birthdad character Nate Bazile) because Baze is the real father.
He would be my real daddy and I want my real daddy. He's fun but he also does care. He doesn't really know how to show he cares. He can be emotional and affectionate. I'd give him a little bit of a break and take him as a dad.
Do you sometimes feel like your friends are your family, like Lux does?
Britt: Definitely. When I'm in Los Angeles, my family isn't out there with me. They're back in South Carolina so I have to establish my own family and living here (Vancouver) as well, our cast and our crew are our family and my friends back home are my family. I went back home this past weekend. I call them my 'faux' family. I lived with them for about a year, went home, slept on their couch and their beds. I love them so I could connect with Lux in that way.

The CWA lot of adopted teens wonder who their birth parents might be. As research for the part did you have friends who were adopted to talk to about that?
Britt: Liz (Tigelaar, show exec producer/creator) is adopted and her main thing was when the wrote the pilot, she had been seeking out her biological parents and she had imagined these perfect parents and then she found out they weren't perfect because there aren't any perfect parents and that's the case for Lux.
I don't know anybody who was adopted or in foster care in my personal life but I did do a lot of research for the show with a lot of organizations and programs. I did speak with a lot of people and I do a lot of blogging with people who had been in the system so I had that reference.
Did you ever watch the TV show "Roswell"? Were you familiar with Shiri before you met her?
Britt: Yeah, I'd seen "Roswell" before and Charlie Wilson's War that she did so I was definitely familiar with her work
Do you girls have more of a sisterly/pal relationship off set than mom/daughter?
Britt: We have five different relationships in one relationship. She's motherly and also like one of my best friends here and she's my roommate. She's my co-worker so we have a crazy relationship that I haven't had with anyone else but, more than anything, we're like really good friends.

The CWLux was wearing cute clothes in the pilot then, once under Cate's (Shiri's) influence, she is wearing different cute clothes. Do you like them, would you wear them and do you get to keep any of them?
Britt: Good question! I love all the stuff. Our costume designer is amazing and she has such a vision for Lux. There is a wardrobe transition in the show. It's cute, it's great. I love all the stuff.
And I do get to keep some stuff. Sometimes they're like 'oh, we can't use that for this episode' or 'we can't really use that for Lux but you can have it' and I'm like 'oh? Great!' Or if we have events for the show, they'll style me and say 'well, we fit it to you so you can have it'.
Do you have a favorite designer?
Britt: I don't think I have a favorite designer but I love 'vintagey', Bo-Ho type stuff. I'll go into different stores and pick out my favorite piece of the collection or of the store. It's not a specific designer. I like soft materials.
What do you hope the showrunners and writers will let Lux do in the series eventually?
Britt: In season 2 I really want a karaoke episode. I sing horribly but I think that would be the most fun. I love to sing. I love to yell and scream at the top of my lungs.
Well, your dad in the film owns a bar so that seems like a real possibility.
Britt: Oh my gosh you are so right! I hadn't thought of that. I'm pitching that for season 2!
What kind of music are you most into right now?
Britt: I'm just bought John Mayer's new CD and I'm going to his concert in March in L.A. I've got Nora Jones' new CD and I love her stuff. I love a lot of soulful, independent stuff and cool indie rock.
You are shooting in Vancouver. Will you go to the Olympics there?
Britt: No. We wrap the day before opening ceremonies.
Bummer
Britt: Yeah.
